You may be wondering about my little painting project I mentioned a few weeks ago. I’ve been enjoying working on it in my free moments, and here is a peek. This is the first pony. One more is coming along.
This “leisure” art is called “picture smocking.” The picture is formed with simple stacked “cable” stitches. It requires a piece of pleated fabric that, when finished, serves as an insert into a garment. The gathering threads will be removed, the piece will be straightened and blocked, and then it’s ready to go.
This insert will be part of a dress shirt for my son, and it requires one more pony for the right side of the shirt that is a mirror image of the first. It is recommended that the base fabric be a broadcloth or heavier fabric to support the picture smocking. The fabric I’m using is Bear Threads’ Swiss shirting.
