Garter Stitch Hat

Hat2
Size: Child 12-14
Level: Intermediate
Abbreviations:
K=Knit K2tog=Knit 2 together

You need:
Size 9 circular knitting needles
2 balls dk weight yarn in two different colors
Yarn needle.
Ruler.

Hat Instructions:
Holding both strands of the two yarn colors, cast on 77 stitches, knit in garter st for approximately 5 inches. You will now start decreasing.

Row 1: K9, K2tog repeat to end of row (70 st.)

Row 2: K8, K2tog repeat to end of row (63 st.)

Row 3: K

Row 4: K7, K2tog repeat to end of row (56 st.)

Row 5: K6, K2tog repeat to end of row (49 st.)

Row 6: K

Row 7: K5, K2tog repeat to end of row (42 st.)

Row 8: K4, K2tog repeat to end of row (35 st.)

Row 9: K

Row 10: K3, K2tog repeat to end of row (28 st.)

Row 11: K2, K2tog repeat to end of row (21 st.)

Row 12: K

Row 13: K1, K2tog repeat to end of row (14 st.)

Row 14: K2tog to end of row (7 st.)

Cut yarn leaving a tail of about 8 inches, and then pull it though remaining st. Sew up the hat and weave in the yarn tails.

Ear flap Instructions:

Now you are going to make ear flaps. The ear flaps are optional but they keep the wearer warmer, and give the hat a really pretty look.

The ear flap pattern is for both the right ear flap and the left. You can also make your ear flaps wider if you would like, but make sure your stitch number is divisible by 6, and when you start doing the I-cord, you have only 3 stitches, and you will have to decrease more.

Fold the hat in half, with the seam in the back, and pick up 12 stitches. Knit in garter stitch until you have 5 ridges on the right side. Knit next row. You will now start decreasing the number of stitches for the ear flaps as follows:

Row 1: K2, K2tog repeat to end of row (9 st.)

Row 2: K

Row 3: K1, K2tog repeat to end of row (6 st.)

Row 4: K2tog to end of row (3 st.)

Row 5: K across, then slide to other end of needles (this is why I said circular knitting needles in the “What you need” section) and knit. Repeat this for 10 inches or desired length. DO NOT TURN!!! If you turn it will not create the right effect. Repeat this on the other side for other ear flap (you might want to mark where you want the I-cord on both sides when you pick up st).
